It has been reported that a 65-year-old female had got declining speech for the past seven years, concomitant with “rampant caries”in her mouth and “vitiligo”on her skin. She was also allergic to penicillin, together with an abnormal subpopulation of lymphocytes (TBNK) and multiple foci of demyelination seen on her brain CT (limbic system). Finally,a diagnosis of presenile dementia resulting from Sjogren's syndrome was established for this lady, suggesting that the autoimmunity mechanism may be involved in the pathogenesis of presenile dementia in a relatively young person.
2024-04-19T00:00:00+08:00 Copyright © 2024 Mi mi zhou https://journals.bilpubgroup.com/index.php/jgm/article/view/6229 An Analysis of Two Aged Patients with Obstructive Hydrocephalus 2024-01-30T15:43:15+08:00 MiMi zhou 1473454439@qq.com Yue Chen 1473454439@qq.com Baoping Song 1473454439@qq.com Gang Li 1473454439@qq.com Zhengyao Peng 1473454439@qq.com
What causes would you think of in an aged patient with hydrocephalus on his or her brain CT scan? These are two cases of obstructive hydrocephalus, that occurred with gradual mental loss and difficult walking due to the rigidity of both legs. A final diagnosis of obstructive hydrocephalus was established on the basis of their abnormal immunological tests;and drainage tubes were then inserted intracranially to alleviate the increased intracranial pressure(ICP),their total situations improved significantly. The authors realized that an autoimmune mechanism might be involved in a possible ependymitis inside their ventricular systems, and an earlier intervention of autoimmune may retard its natural process.
2024-03-20T00:00:00+08:00 Copyright © 2024 Mi mi zhou, Yue Chen, Baoping Song, Gang Li, Zhengyao Peng https://journals.bilpubgroup.com/index.php/jgm/article/view/6303 One-Year Impact of a Multidomain Brain Health Intervention on Cognition and Behavior Change for Midlife and Older Adults: A Pilot Clinical Trial 2024-04-08T09:39:38+08:00 Maureen Schmitter-Edgecombe schmitter-e@wsu.edu Brenna Boyd brenna.boyd@wsu.edu
Objectives. At one-year follow-up, this study explored whether a multidomain brain-health intervention resulted in maintained behavior change, provided cognitive benefits, increased self-efficacy for behavior change, and whether participants intended to continue with these changes. Methods. One-hundred thirty midlife and older adults were assigned to one of three conditions: brain fitness (B-Fit) intervention utilizing education and goal setting, education-only, or waitlist control. Questionnaires and cognitive measures were administered. Results. Both B-Fit and education-only participants maintained increased levels of health behavior changes at follow-up testing. There were no clinically meaningful cognitive benefits nor impact on self-efficacy. B-Fit participants reported greater intention to increase health behaviors in the coming year compared to education-only. Discussion. The B-Fit intervention helped participants change their behaviors and maintain these changes over time; however, it was not more effective than the education-only condition. Although, B-Fit participants self-reported a greater likelihood to increase these behavior changes over time.
2024-04-19T00:00:00+08:00 Copyright © 2024 Maureen Schmitter-Edgecombe, Brenna Boyd https://journals.bilpubgroup.com/index.php/jgm/article/view/6276 Factors influencing nocturia in benign prostatic hyperplasia risk population: Results based on NHANES(2017-2020) 2024-02-29T17:25:12+08:00 ZeChao zhang edwardbangong@163.com BoTao Tang 393067128@qq.com ChangJie Shang 1352271520@qq.com XueJin Ye yexjin@foxmail.com QingYun Yang 1822932144@qq.com Fang Hu 2848378184@qq.com Min Zhu chao616317728@foxmail.com
Background

To explore the influencing factors of nocturia in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) risk population.

Methods

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between the years 2017 and 2020 were analyzed to explore factors influencing nocturia in BPH risk population. After the inclusion of BPH risk population over 50 years old, the data with incomplete data were excluded, and then univariate logistic regression was used to find the influencing factors for nocturia. Finally, all the influencing factors for nocturia were included for multiple logistic regression. The crucial factors were analyzed by ROC.

Results

A total of 15,560 is managed. Among these, 1754 men are classified as BPH risk group. Depression rating level, history of elevated blood pressure, obesity, daytime sleepy, sleep problems, depression, Leak urine during non-exercise, leak urine before toilet, leak urine during exercise, frequency of urine leakage, age and weekday sleep are found to be associated with nocturia by univariate logistic regression(p < 0.05). Depression rating level, obesity and leak urine before toilet are risk factors for nocturia by multiple logistic regression(p < 0.05). Age(adjusted OR: 1.020, 95% CI 1.006–1.035, p = 0.006), PHQ-9(adjusted OR: 1.100, 95% CI 1.068–1.133, p = 0.000), and BMI(adjusted OR: 1.029 95% CI 1.007–1.052, p = 0.010) as continuous variables are still risk factors for nocturia(p < 0.05). ROC analysis shows that the highest AUX of PHQ-9 is 0.633, frequency of urine leakage 0.571, BMI 0.553, Age 0.549.

Conclusions

The nocturia symptoms of BPH risk population are caused by multiple factors. Among the comprehensive effects of various influencing factors, age, PHQ-9, BMI, frequency of urine leakage play a major role. The most relevant is PHQ-9, that is, the level of depression score.
2024-03-30T00:00:00+08:00 Copyright © 2024 zechao zhang, botao tang, changjie shang, xuejin ye, qingyun yang, fang hu, Min Zhu https://journals.bilpubgroup.com/index.php/jgm/article/view/6205 Is it now appropriate to assert that creatine supplementation holds cognitive benefits for the elderly? 2024-01-09T09:25:46+08:00 Marco Machado marcomachado1@gmail.com
This paper explores the potential cognitive benefits of creatine supplementation for the elderly population. Creatine, known for its role in muscular and neuronal energy metabolism, is primarily obtained through dietary intake, particularly from meat sources. The literature underscores creatine's significance in neural tissue development and cognitive capacity, with deficiencies linked to impaired cognitive function, especially in infants. In the context of the aging global population, cognitive decline is a prevalent concern, and reduced creatine concentration is implicated in this process. While association studies suggest a connection between creatine intake and cognitive performance in the elderly, the absence of robust clinical trials calls for further investigation. Physiological plausibility supports the idea that increased creatine intake, combined with physical activities, could positively impact cognition in the elderly. However, the existing evidence remains inconclusive, and rigorous randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials are essential to establish a cause-and-effect relationship and elucidate underlying mechanisms. Confirmation of cognitive benefits could pave the way for determining optimal dosages to enhance cognitive function in the elderly.
2024-02-19T00:00:00+08:00 Copyright © 2024 Marco Machado
