Topical Collection information

Dear colleagues,

Regional development and sustainable development are two related but distinct concepts. Regional development refers to the efforts to improve a particular region's economic, social, and environmental conditions. This includes increasing employment opportunities, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the overall quality of life for people in the region. Environmental issues can have a significant impact on both regional development and sustainable development. For example: (i) Climate change: Climate change can cause extreme weather events, sea level rise, and other environmental impacts that can damage infrastructure and disrupt economic activity in a region. Climate change also threatens natural resources and ecosystems, which can affect the livelihoods of people who depend on them; (ii) Natural resource depletion: Regional development often involves the extraction and use of natural resources, such as minerals, timber, or water. However, overexploitation or mismanagement of these resources can lead to their depletion, which can have long-term adverse effects on the environment and the economy;(iii) Pollution: Pollution can damage the natural environment and public health, which can affect the productivity and quality of life of people in the region. Pollution can also harm ecosystems and reduce the availability of natural resources; (iv) Biodiversity loss: Biodiversity loss can have economic and ecological consequences, as it can reduce the productivity of ecosystems and limit the availability of resources. Biodiversity loss can also lead to cultural heritage and traditional knowledge loss.

Contextually, addressing these environmental issues is critical to achieving regional and sustainable development. Sustainable development initiatives can help promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources while reducing pollution and promoting climate resilience. Regional development efforts should consider the environmental impacts of economic activity and infrastructure development and incorporate strategies to minimize adverse environmental impacts and promote sustainability.
