Topical Collection Information
The objective of the special issue entitled “Language Teacher Training in Rural Environments” is twofold. Firstly, an analysis will be provided of the many problems faced by language teachers in many rural areas over the world, mainly those which are associated with the so-called demographic challenge. This is often related to the physical distance from the centers of control, decision making, and resource distribution. In addition to this scenario, there are challenges that arise with the new social profiles, digital technology, etc. This volume also seeks to identify the strengths of rural educational centers, i.e., those aspects that make them unique and exemplary, and mostly arise from their natural surroundings, the size and proximity of the community, the relative bureaucratic simplicity and the presence of a set of traditions and lifestyles. These, rather than weighing their members down, provide a cultural identity that shelters and supports them. The scope of this volume includes both teachers and their students. Thus, it seeks to present the reader with a range of ways of incorporating an array of idiosyncratic territorial and cultural elements and articulating them in the educational framework in order to turn them into valuable strategies and resources at the service of language teachers.
The volume will include articles on topics including the following:
- Deficiencies and limitations in language teachers’ professional development in deprived areas
- Innovative methodological and/or technological strategies and techniques in the different stages of rural language education
- Analyses of urban vs rural language learning achievement/failure
- The enhancement of rural identity and idiosyncrasy to prevent language teacher abandonment and student dropout
- The impact of equity and values in successful language teaching in rural environments
