The main idea of integrated urban-rural development is to narrow the gap between urban and rural, improve residents' living standards, promote equal exchange and rational allocation of public resources, form a mutual supporting industrial and agricultural urban-rural relationship, propel urban-rural complementarity, realize comprehensive integration and common prosperity, and realize agricultural and rural modernization. Maturity of digital technologies, in the meanwhile, reshapes the way we perceive cities. AI and big geo-data are opening up possibilities for deeper understanding of the processes and consequences of urbanization and integrated urban-rural development and further inform our policy and practice in building healthy and orderly urbanization. In view of these challenges and opportunities, and responding to the 11th UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG11) — Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, this Special Edition of the Journal of Geographical Research invites original papers on topics related to the theories, methods, solutions, and empirical studies of Urbanization and integrated urban-rural development.
