Abstract

The fast industrialization and urbanization in China have created intricate man-made emissions that have led to gross air degradation with immense environmental, climatic, and health consequences. This is a synthesis of the existing knowledge on Chinese emissions, considering the lenses of environmental and Earth science and incorporating the knowledge on the origins of emissions, atmospheric change, transportation of the pollutants, and environmental effects. It also takes a critical look at ground and satellite-based monitoring, emission inventories, and chemical transport modeling and their importance in assessing the dynamics of pollutants and the effectiveness of control measures. The air quality management policies of China are also examined in the article, such as policy frameworks, technological interventions, and socio-economic measures, and their effectiveness in reducing PM2.5 and SO2, as well as the current challenges of NOx, ozone, and secondary aerosols. The main new challenges, including aerosol-climate interactions, formation of secondary pollutants, and transboundary transport, are outlined, with the importance of integrated, adaptive, multi-sectoral responses. The review determines knowledge gaps in quantification of emissions, chemical transformation, and policy review, providing guidelines on future research and management policies that can maximize environmental, climatic, and public health co- benefits. This work offers an integrated approach to the science of emission, atmospheric processes, and environmental management that can be used to help us understand and control air pollution in China.
