Abstract

In applying stylistic analysis, language and literature are merged to analyze literary pieces such as short stories. However, based on several studies conducted in this genre, it was discovered that studies which dealt with the stylistic analysis of short stories written particularly by the Filipino national artists for literature remains to be unexplored. Therefore, by focusing only on lexical and grammatical categories, this paper looked into these linguistic features which serve as linguistic evidence to support the literary interpretations of these stories. As for lexical analysis, the results showed that there are some specialized vocabulary found in the stories. The presence of some nouns, adjectives, and verbs in the stories are also relevant for they reveal meaningful insights about these stories. Similarly, grammatical features found also aid in formulating solid and substantial interpretations of the stories. Specifically, these features include sentence complexity (cumulative sentences), fragments, verb tenses, direct speeches, and punctuations (colon). Further, as for pedagogical implications, this study promotes stylistics to the teaching of Philippine literature in English because teachers can further enrich their instructions by merging stylistics with their existing array of approaches and strategies used in their literature classrooms.
